As our houses become more digitized, there are more opportunities for hackers to break into our systems, either for pure mischief or for more nefarious purposes such as stealing our stuff.  Engineers designing the devices allowing us to control our thermostat or lights from our smart phone haven’t made security a top priority in the past, and hackers are expected to soon start exploiting that fact.
